Preparing for Holy Week 2026

Dear Friends in Christ:
Today we enter Passiontide and prepare ourselves for Holy Week 2026.

This is a most beautiful time of the Church’s liturgical year; we retrace those last days of Our Blessed Lord’s life, as we journey with Him through His Passion, Death to Resurrection on Easter Day.

Next Sunday is Palm Sunday and marks the beginning of our Holy Week 2026. We will travel with the Lord Jesus on his triumphant entry into Jerusalem, with the cries of ‘Hosanna to the Son of David’, as they lay their palm branches before him. We also must remember this same crowd in a few days’ time will be baying for his blood with cries of ‘Crucify him, Crucify him’!

THE TRIDUUM OF THE LORD: Is the most powerful liturgy that we experience during the church’s liturgical year. I encourage you all to participate fully in these most wonderful celebrations of the Lord’s Passion, Death, and Resurrection.

We share together the Mass of The Lord’s Supper on Holy Thursday, 8.00pm, with the re-enactment of the Mandatum – Washing of Feet, and the Institution of the Holy Eucharist. There will be Watching at the Altar of Repose until 11.00pm.

The Good Friday Liturgy is simple and sombre; we enter the Cathedral in silence. St John’s Passion is read and Veneration of the Cross takes place, we leave in silence. 3.00pm

The high point of the Liturgical Year is The Easter Vigil, 7.30pm, it encapsulates the whole story of Salvation History. Listening attentively to the Sacred Scriptures, until we reach that moment in time when Jesus Christ triumphed over sin and death through the Resurrection. At the Vigil we will baptise five Catechumens and receive into full-communion, seven candidates for the Sacraments. This is a very special time in their lives as they commit themselves to Jesus Christ through the Catholic Faith. Please pray for them in these final days of preparation.

May God Bless You All during Holy Week
